Deerfield Cutlery's Philosophy

When I transitioned my dad’s business, Deerfield Forge, to my business, Deerfield Cutlery, I knew I wanted to honor him in the way I do business. That is why I personally choose every item in my inventory to ensure that it is dependable, fairly priced, and honestly made to ensure it is ready for whatever your day brings. Since 1991, I have worked with thousands of customers looking for various types of knives. The common theme is that each person wants to take home something that they can count on to work in their everyday life. Whether they are purchasing a tool to complement their toolbox, purchasing a knife to ride in their pocket comfortably, or simply to fix their family’s meals; it is clear that they all come looking for quality, dependable craftsmanship that is priced just right. I take that responsibility seriously because finding the right fit is not just a goal, it is the standard behind every decision I make.

Dependability is not something people believe just because it is said to them, it is earned through experience, proven when the same knife or tool holds up time and again. It shows up in craftsmanship from regions around the world that pride themselves on heritage, not high-volume production measured by units out the door instead of quality. Dependability is proven every time a customer comes back to see me. They know I will always put their needs ahead of my own needs. That is why the same faces find me at every show I attend, not because I chased them down and gave them a sales pitch, but because they knew I would still be there to let them experience what dependability really looks like.

Fair pricing might seem straightforward, but it is rooted in the same ethics, values, and dependability as everything else on my table. A customer's first experience with any business comes down to a price tag, so I want that number to open a conversation, not close one. The price chosen reflects a balance between quality craftsmanship and real affordability. This is proof that what is sourced responsibly does not have to come at an unreasonable cost. It is my way of showing customers that what they spend with me is an investment, not just in a knife or tool, but in a business built to be here for them for years to come.

“Cutting Edge Tools for Everyday Life” is not just a slogan on a banner. It is the principle my business is built on. I use the word utilitarian to describe the type of knives and tools I carry because that is exactly what my inventory is: knives and tools with a job to do, whether that is a kitchen knife, a hatchet, a multi-tool, or a pruning knife for the garden. Quality is not an accident; Estwing hatchetit comes from reliable materials and the care taken in every piece that is made. This standard of quality helps ensure that each item chosen will do its job well. I trust that every item has earned its place in my inventory only after it has been vetted through my own experience, through my family, and even through trusted long-term customers.

While it is true that I sell knives, I see them as an extension of what task is being performed. Kitchen knives make family meals where memories are made. Hatchets are brought on hunting trips where kids spend time with family. Multi-tools help provide income needed to support families. Remember that pruning knife? It brings beauty into a world where family is often forgotten. Regardless of the tool or task, it always leads back to what matters – family.
